You Don't Have to Have It All Figured Out on Day One

A new school year can make your brain ask a lot of questions.

Who am I going to sit with?

Are my classes going to be hard?

What if I don't know anyone?

What if my teacher doesn't like me?

What if I don't make the team?

What if this year is just like last year?

What if I mess something up?

Before you've even had a chance to experience the year, your brain may already be trying to predict how the whole thing is going to turn out.

That's what anxious brains do.

They want certainty.

They want the entire map before taking the first step.

But you don't need to figure out the whole school year today.

You just need to take the next step.

Find your first class.

Say hi to one person.

Ask the question.

Eat lunch.

Get through practice.

Come home.

Rest.

Then do the next day.

When your brain starts racing ahead, try asking yourself:

Is this something happening right now, or something I'm afraid might happen?

Then bring yourself back to what you actually know.

You aren't supposed to have everything figured out yet.

New routines take time.

Friendships take time.

Confidence takes time.

Finding your place takes time.

There may be awkward days.

There may be hard days.

There will probably be really good days, too.

You don't have to decide what kind of year this will be based on the first day, first week, or even first month.

Give yourself permission to adjust.

You don't need the whole map today. You just need the next step.
