Why You Feel Left Out (Even When You're Included)

Have you ever been hanging out with your friends and suddenly thought...

"I don't think they actually want me here."

No one told you to leave.

No one was necessarily being mean.

You were invited.

You were included.

But somehow, you still felt like the extra person.

The backup friend.

The person everyone would probably be fine without.

And then your brain starts working overtime.

"Did I say something weird?"

"Are they annoyed with me?"

"Why did they laugh after I walked away?"

"Would they even notice if I wasn't here?"

If you've ever felt this way, you're not the only one.

You Can Feel Lonely in a Room Full of People

People often assume loneliness means being alone.

But sometimes the loneliest feeling is sitting in a room full of people and wondering if anyone actually knows you.

You laugh when everyone else laughs.

You scroll through your phone.

You act like everything is fine.

But inside, you're questioning whether you really belong.

That's a hard feeling to explain.

Especially when someone says:

"But you have friends."

You know.

That's what makes it confusing.

Your Brain Hates Missing Information

Here's something interesting about our brains.

When we don't know the answer to something, our minds often try to fill in the blank.

Your friend doesn't text back.

Your brain says:

"They're mad at me."

Two friends hang out without you.

Your brain says:

"They like each other more."

Someone seems quiet around you.

Your brain says:

"I did something wrong."

But here's the problem.

A thought can feel true without actually being a fact.

Sometimes your brain is trying to protect you from rejection by looking for rejection everywhere.

Social Media Adds Fuel to the Fire

Then you open your phone.

You see the picture.

The Snapchat story.

The TikTok.

Everyone is smiling.

Everyone looks close.

And suddenly you're comparing your entire friendship to one picture.

Social media gives us tiny snapshots of people's lives.

But our brains turn those snapshots into entire stories.

"They always have fun without me."

"Everyone has a best friend except me."

"I don't belong anywhere."

Remember this:

You are seeing a moment.

Not the entire story.

Maybe You're Working Too Hard to Belong

Sometimes feeling left out makes us try harder.

We change how we talk.

We laugh at things we don't think are funny.

We pretend to like things we don't actually like.

We stay quiet because we're afraid of saying the wrong thing.

We become whoever we think the group wants us to be.

And then something strange happens.

We're included...

But we still feel alone.

Because the version of us being included doesn't feel completely real.

You Shouldn't Have to Perform for Your Place

Healthy friendships don't require you to constantly prove you deserve to be there.

You shouldn't have to replay every conversation when you get home.

You shouldn't have to constantly wonder if everyone is secretly mad at you.

You shouldn't have to change your entire personality to keep people around.

The right friendships create room for you to be yourself.

Not a perfect version.

Not the funniest version.

Not the quietest version.

You.

If This Sounds Like You

Maybe you've been feeling invisible lately.

Maybe you're surrounded by people but still feel alone.

Maybe you're exhausted from constantly wondering what everyone thinks about you.

You don't have to keep carrying that by yourself.

Counseling can be a place where you don't have to perform, pretend, or have the perfect words.

We can work on the anxiety, overthinking, friendships, and self-worth underneath those feelings.

You deserve a place where you can figure out who you are without constantly worrying about whether everyone else approves.

If you're ready to talk, I'd be honored to sit with you.

You don't have to earn your place in my office.

You can simply show up as you are.
